Importance and general aspects:
It is the most central and most important square of Antalya. It hosts parades and many events on special occasions. There is a wonderful view terrace on the south side overlooking Kaleici (Oldtown) . On the south-west side, which was used as an arsenal in the past, there are cafes with unique views and a panoramic elevator that provides direct access to the historic marina.
The “National Ascension Monument” in the middle of the square was built in 1964 by Prof Hüseyin Gezer. The stone-covered reinforced concrete base on which the statue is located was designed by the famous architect Tarık Akıltopu.

It is within walking distance to many places in the city center. You can also use taxi, tram, and car.
