Importance and general aspects:

Known as “Santa Claus” in the world, St. Nicholas was born in Patara, a Lycian city in 243 AD. Aziz Nikolas, who was engaged in maritime and gained the love of the people with his benevolence, settled in Myra in 285 AD. In the same year he was chosen as Myra Bishop. For the saint, who was thought to have died on December 6, 343 when he was 65 years old, Myra built a church and occupied him in his sarcophagus in this endless sleep. However, in 1087, during the Crusades, traders from Bari, Italy took the bones of St. Nicholas and took them to Bari and buried them in the Basilica they made. The bones that are supposed to be left behind are preserved in the Antalya Museum today. Every year, on the 6th of December, many Christians come to Demre and commemorate St. Nicholas with a ritual46.

The miracles that are believed to have been performed by St. Nicholas were depicted on the church walls built by the Myrans on behalf of St. Nicholas, known as the “Saint of Miracles” and renovated at various times. Saint Nicholas Church is the most outstanding example of the Middle Byzantine Period with an important monument, architectural style and decoration of Byzantine art history. There are many buildings built at different times on the original foundations of today’s church. Thus, the church looks like a complex built at various times. This complex outlines; The two narthex (inner courtyards) opening to the courtyard consist of a domed middle space (naos) located between the two side corridors, the bema and the apse with the syntranon (choir steps) in front of it47.
